Abdominal pain or gut problems in children are not only distressing for the child, they are extremely stressful for parents. Speed of diagnosis and treatment is vital and whilst NHS treatment matches the best in the world, access to NHS paediatric services isn’t always as quick as we would all like. It’s one of those times where choosing to go private can make sense. A same day or next day consultation makes a huge difference, if only for peace of mind. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be expensive and the majority of children’s gut problems tend to resolve quickly with the right treatment.

Here is what I would do when I see a child with abdominal pain.

REMEMBER. We are not Children A+E. We do not treat children with acute illnesses such as fever, breathing difficulty, surgical problem (appendicitis, laceration, testicular torsion). You will need to take your child to the nearest children A+E for diagnosis and treatment.
